The latter half of the movie is on the Vietnam War itself, and the horrors presented there. In the end of basic training, the desensitization proved to be too much for Private Pyle, and so the day before he was to be deployed, he shoots the drill sergeant and himself. He develops a hatred for the drill sergeant, and he begins showing signs of madness. But when the rest of the platoon attacks him because of his failure to meet the drill sergeant’s standards, something goes off in Pyle’s mind. Private Pyle is constantly messing up, and is even assigned another man to take care of him for his misbehavior. Though the movie is from a third-person perspective, the first half is based around a character private Gomer Pyle. The drill sergeant (who I had known from earlier was an actual Marine drill sergeant) would go on tirades explaining to these men the importance of being masculine and the importance of mental toughness in the Marines (though it was not explained that easily). This week I watched the movie “Full Metal Jacket” for the first time in my life and let me tell you, it was one of the most dramatic movies I’ve seen in my entire life.įirst, let’s start with the first half: completely dedicated to the alpha-male training of the United States Marine Corps.
